A garment as rich in cultural significance as it is in fabric, The Kaftan has weaved its way through various civilizations and across continents. We were first introduced to the long, flowing robe by ancient Middle Easterners. It was a symbol of status and sophistication with its roots tracing back to the Mesopotamian region, just north of present-day Dubai.
Royal courts were known to lavish in kaftans crafted with luxurious fabrics and intricate designs.
The Kaftan then made its way into West Africa, where it took on new forms and significance. It was adapted to fit local tastes and climates, ranging from the lighter, more vibrant versions worn in West African nations to the richly embroidered, heavier kaftans of North Africa. This adaptability speaks to the kaftan’s unique place in fashion history – a garment that transcends borders yet retains a distinctive identity in each new setting.
